Having graduated ‘Modern Languages’ in UCD, Carla moved abroad. Working hard as an English teacher but finding herself cash-poor, she saw the opportunity to offer classes in exchange for the services she wanted. She spent two years bartering around Spain and Italy, until the pandemic hit. Since moving home she’s been working on her first start-up – barterkind.com – on a mission to bring together a community of like-minded people and make services more accessible to them, by bringing barter back!
Q 1- How does your normal day begin?
I’d love to say I’m an early riser but I’m really a night owl… so my day begins around 9 am. Have to have a chat with the dog first and a short walk to wake the brain, then I sit down with a cup of coffee on my to do list.
Q 2- What are your biggest daily challenges?
Motivating myself to get through that same to-do list… it can be difficult to stay productive when you’re answering only to yourself, and there’s no ‘boss’ to hold you accountable.
Q3- What do you love most about your job?
Customer conversations! We’re still early stages with a long road ahead, but after every call with a potential customer, I have a renewed sense of purpose, energy and hope. They remind me daily of why I’m creating barterkind.com
Q 4- What do you do to relax?
Sea swimming – nothing like the Atlantic Ocean in winter to get you out of your head. I also go to regular yoga classes at my favourite studio ‘The Yoga Root’ in Westport, and usually finish off the day / decompress with some journaling.
Q 5-Favourite staycation destination in Ireland and why?
I’m from Westport and can’t recommend this town enough for a staycation. Also a huge fan of West Cork – Kinsale, Inchydonny, Bantry, Glengariff – if you find yourself down there on a sunny day, it’s as tropical as anywhere.
Q 6-Favourite holiday destination worldwide?
I just adore Italy and living la dolce vita. The culture, language, food, wine – and each city are more beautiful than the next.
Q 7-Favourite Business motto?
My mottos for life, as well as business, are ‘thoughts become things ‘what’s for you won’t pass you’ and ‘never say never.
Q 8. Advice for young business entrepreneurs
There is so so much support out there for entrepreneurs, especially in Ireland! So get out there, see what’s available to you and don’t be afraid to ask for what you need.
