“A day in the life of” Gabe Saglie, Senior Communications manager at Travelzoo

Q 1- How does your normal day begin? –

I’m an early riser – must be the 5 years I spent rising at 2 am for my job as morning weatherman in Santa Barbara, California! These days, usually by sunrise: email catch-up & often a live TV interview about travel! Brief crawl back into bed when my wife wakes up for coffee and news. Bike riding or jogging get me out the door for some fresh air and driving my kids to school whenever possible ensures a little one-on-one time.

Q 2- What are your biggest daily challenges?

In a Covid world, the biggest challenge is balancing work life and hubby/daddy life. The whole world is adjusting with me though, so the juggle has become refreshingly easier to do!

Q3- What do you love most about your job?

Travel has universal appeal, so it’s great to work in a business in which, to some degree, you speak everyone’s language. I see what I do not so much as a job, but a lifestyle, and that makes it much easier to love!

Q 4- What do you do to relax?

Food and drink are my side passions. Being the family chef for my wife Renee and our three kids is both a creative outlet and a wonderful way to relax. So is sipping good wine (and Irish whiskey) with my wife!

Q 5-Favourite staycation destination in Ireland and why?

Unfair question – every corner of Ireland is a gem. But I do love the Wild Atlantic Way for its sweeping scenery, its remoteness and its people! And Co. Meath for its history & food!

Q 6-Favourite holiday destination worldwide?

Our annual family destination for the holidays is Wailea, on Maui, Hawaii. Quick flight for us from Los Angeles, great weather, great eating and a rare chance for all of to reconnect and recharge!

Q 7-Favourite Business motto?

I like Nike’s motto: Just do it. Enough with waiting until tomorrow to pursue that dream (or to open that fancy bottle of wine) – do it now!

Q 8. Advice for young business entrepreneurs

Always have your elevator pitch ready – opportunity can strike anywhere and at any time!
