Traditional Cottages

An CLACHAN

A clachTRan is historically a group of small single-story cottages, usually belonging to farming or fishing people and sited on poor land. Each cottage in the Folk Village ‘clachan’ recreates a different era of Irish history. Cottages are neatly white-washed, with a traditional half-door design to keep the animals out and the people in. Roofs are thatched in the distinctive, rounded Donegal style, tied down securely with rope and pegs to protect the thatching from the fierce westerly winds off the ocean.

Go traidisiúnta thugtaí Clachan ar ghrúpa beag de bhotháin aonstóir suite ar thalamh bocht ina mbíodh cónaí ar fheirmeoirí nó ar iascairí de ghnáth. Léiríonn gach bothán sa Chlachan aois faoi leith i stair na hÉireann. Tá na botháin bánaithe go néata, le leathdhoirse traidisiúnta a choinnigh na hainmhithe amuigh agus na daoine istigh. Tá ceann tuí ar na tithe i stíl chruinn shainiúil Thír Chonaill, ceangailte síos go daingean le rópaí agus bioráin chun an tuí a chosaint ó ghaotha láidre aniar ón fharraige.

Learn Through Living History

Ó GHLÚIN GO GLÚIN

Our education programmes bring Irish history to life for students of all ages. Through hands-on experiences in traditional thatched cottages, pupils explore how people lived, learned, and worked in Ireland from the 1700s onwards. Whether it’s churning butter, writing with slate and chalk, or hearing stories from our expert guides, every visit is a memorable step back in time.

Please contact us in advance if you wish to bring a group for our guided tour.

Tá clár oideachais s’againne fóirsteaneach do mhic léinn de gach aois. Trí eispéiris phraiticiúla i dtithe tuí traidisiúnta, déanann daltaí iniúchadh ar an dóigh ar mhair, ar fhoghlaim agus ar oibrigh daoine in Éirinn ó na 1700í ar aghaidh.

Más mian leat grúpa a thabhairt ar turas treoraithe ní mór duit teagmháil a dhéanamh linn roimh ré.
