A must for all fans of contemporary art, an exhibition entitled Belonging is set to go on show this spring in Ireland’s Limerick city.
The major exhibition, featuring 82 works by European artists from all 27 countries of the EU, will be on show from 10 February to 24 April in the city well known as a visual arts hub.
The contemporary pieces, on loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) Art Collection, will be displayed across eight locations in Limerick and are linked to the European Expo, a series of exhibitions, seminars, events and celebrations that will communicate national and European culture and cooperation over the course of 2022.
Limerick will be the first city outside of European capitals to host an art exhibition belonging to the EIB, making the occasion a momentous one for fans of contemporary art and those seeking the ultimate in cultural discovery.
The exhibition is co-curated by Delphine Munro of the EIB and Limerick’s Hunt Museum with input from the partner venues.
Renowned European artists such as Paula Rego, Sean Scully, Isobel Nolan, Tony Cragg, Anish Kapoor, and Jannis Kounellis will feature. Artists of note with a strong European connection, such as Andy Warhol and Marlene Dumas, are also included in the exhibit.
The theme of ‘Belonging’ coincidently fits perfectly with the French government’s ‘Recovery, power, belonging’ motto for the EU presidency in the first half of 2022.
Among the eight locations across Limerick hosting Belonging is the Hunt Museum, which features one of the greatest private collections of antiquities and visual art in Ireland, dating from the prehistoric Neolithic period to the twentieth century.
Limerick City Gallery of Art, one of the leading contemporary art galleries in Ireland, and The People’s Museum of Limerick, which reflects the diverse lives of the people, buildings, and streets of the city, will also house part of the Belonging exhibition.
The other venues include Mary Immaculate College, Sailors Home, St Mary’s Cathedral and the University of Limerick’s Plassey House and Bourn Vincent Gallery.
Home of great galleries and respected art schools, Limerick is also well-known for EVA International, Ireland’s biennial of contemporary art, which typically culminates in a large-scale temporary exhibition across Limerick.
Since its foundation in 1977, EVA International has worked with some of the world’s leading artists and curators, bringing outstanding exhibitions to audiences on the west coast of Ireland.
Having concluded its 39th biennial, EVA International is open for proposals for significant new works by individual artists and collectives based in Ireland for the next biennial programme running from 2022 – 2023.
