Slane Castle, in the heart of the Boyne Valley, is proud to introduce a new Afternoon Tea Experience combining a miniature guided tour with the grand tradition of afternoon tea and the modern addition of a glass of fizz. Slane Castle has a fascinating history intertwined with that of the Conyngham family who have lived there since 1703. It’s equally famous for 40 years of star studded rock concerts. The Slane Castle Afternoon Tea Experience is presented at 3.30pm most Saturdays starting on Saturday 19th March. On Mothers Day, Sunday 27h March, Afternoon Tea will be served at 12.30pm and 3.30pm. Reservations are essential for all.
An Afternoon Tea Experience Slane Castle style is both different and interesting. Guests are welcomed in the impressive main hallway with its imposing fireplaces, fine Doric columns and magnificent plasterwork. This room has a place in rock history too, as U2s video for Pride (In the Name of Love) was filmed here. The personable tour guide will bring you into the King George IV Ballroom to enjoy a glass of Prosecco while hearing about this truly remarkable circular room which is one of the finest examples of neo-gothic architecture in the entire country. Originally designed by Thomas Hopper as a library, it features perfect acoustics, a spectacular ornate ceiling and tall windows allowing glorious light to pour in.
Then it’s down to the Gandon Room, by way of time-honoured stairs giving a glimpse of another side of this magnificent building. The Gandon Room is designed in a warm, inviting club style, ideal for groups of all sizes from two upwards, to enjoy a gracious afternoon tea. Presented on elegant three-tiered cake stands this delectable combination of savoury and sweet treats is fit indeed for the queen who once graced these hallowed walls with her presence. Cool cucumber and coronation chicken sandwiches compete for attention with duck pancakes and smoked salmon canapes – all minis of course. Macaroons, bitesize desserts and chocolate dipped strawberries sit side-by-side with traditional scones with clotted cream and preserves. All are served on vintage crockery, totally appropriate to the historic setting. The famous Beauparc silver teapot, belonging to Lord Henry himself is even used on very special occasions.
The Slane Castle Afternoon Tea Experience runs at 3.30pm on Saturdays from Saturday 19th March and costs €50 per person including a glass of Prosecco (a non-alcoholic option is available). Reservations are essential and can be made at www.slanecastle.ie. Full Castle Tours can also be pre-booked and drop-ins will be accommodated where possible.
