“A day in the life of” Tommy Hannan, Visitor Experience Operations Manager, Guinness Storehouse

I’m from a small village in Sligo called Gurteen. Moved to Dublin in 1998 to study History in UCD and have mostly lived here ever since. Joined Guinness Storehouse in 2017 and I am the Visitor Experience Operations Manager.

Previously, I managed numerous restaurants across Dublin.

Q 1- How does your normal day begin?

Normally I go for a walk with my dog Lucy at 7 am, have coffee and a bowl of porridge, check my diary for the day before heading into the Home of Guinness. Luckily, I only live 2 mins away from work so the commute is not challenging.

Q 2- What are your biggest daily challenges?

Welcoming thousands of visitors daily and ensuring we are delivering a magical moment for each person who passes through the famous black gates.

Q3- What do you love most about your job?

Being part of an iconic brand and the sense of history and legacy steeped in our location here in St James’s Gate, the team I work with daily and most importantly welcoming visitors from across the globe to the Home of Guinness.

Q 4- What do you do to relax?

Walk my dog, cook, travel and although it is in no way relaxing, an avid follower of Arsenal Football Club.

Q 5-Favourite staycation destination in Ireland and why?

My favourite is Wicklow Head Lighthouse, part of the Irish Landmark Trust. Incredible location on the east coast of Ireland. Where else can you stay in an actual lighthouse, also it is 109 steps up to the kitchen at the top so you get some exercise too!

Q 6-Favourite holiday destination worldwide?

The Philippines, amazing people and incredible diversity between the mountainous Luzon province and the beaches of Bohol.

Q 7-Favourite Business motto?

‘Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life

Q 8. Advice for young business entrepreneurs

I’m going to steal a quote from Michael Jordan ‘I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
