If you’re visiting Galway this spring or summer, make sure to add the Ahascragh Distillery Experience to your list of must-do activities. Located less than an hour from Galway City, in the heart of rural East Galway, the charming village of Ahascragh is home to Ireland’s first eco-distillery and its range of award-winning whiskeys and gin.
A state-of-the-art facility powered entirely by sustainable energy, the distillery is actually housed in a wonderfully restored 19th-century mill. Dublin founders, Michelle and Gareth McAllister discovered the derelict mill while exploring the county, and quickly fell in love with both the building and the village itself.
Determined to bring their vision for a premium Irish spirits brand to life while honouring the heritage of the site, they transformed the mill into a state-of-the-art distillery. The original stonework, stream, and historic waterwheel have all been preserved, while vintage mill equipment has been creatively repurposed into furniture and decor throughout the venue’s Old Mill Shop & Café.
Visitors can expect fully guided tours that conclude with a tasting of the distillery’s award-winning spirits. The Premium Tour offers an elevated experience, involving a tasting of the distillery’s new-make spirit paired with delicious Irish chocolate and a curated selection of local cheeses from nearby Dunmore.
After the tour, you can enjoy a hearty lunch in the cosy café, or, if you’re staying on into the evening, book a table at The Clan Colla Restaurant, also part of the distillery. Named after the distillery’s Family Bond whiskey, Clan Colla is actually the family name of three legendary Celtic kings of ancient Irish history.
What’s the link? Well, that would be spoiling one of many stories to enjoy on the tour while visiting this fascinating distillery in the heart of East Galway.
