A day in the Life of – Louis Mulcahy, Founder Louis Mulcahy Pottery

Questions Q 1- How does your normal day begin? –

I get up at 6 am and write for two hours or go for an outdoor or indoor bike ride on three or four days a week. If I cannot wait to see some pieces from the previous days firing, I go to the kiln shed and inspect the new work.

Q 2- What are your biggest daily challenges?

1) Keeping the pottery afloat financially

2) Finding time to fulfil my other interests. I have been aware for many years that it will be a race to accomplish all I want to do before life runs out.

Q3- What do you love most about your job?

Now that my son Lasse has taken over the running of the pottery, the time and total freedom for experimentation with new glaze textures and colours; sculpting the big pieces and interacting with the talented people around me.

Q 4- What do you do to relax?

I write and sing. I have four books of poetry published, one in Irish and three in English. I have just sent my fifth collection to my publishers, Doire Press.

Q5-Favourite staycation destination in Ireland and why?

Westport for itself and Achill. Wexford town for memories of my childhood there and long summer days on Rosslare and Curracloe strands. It is a beautiful town.

Q 6-Favourite holiday destination worldwide?

1) Kirke Eskildstrup, near Copenhagen’s wonderful museums and galleries. Lovely

city and countryside with splendid cycling paths. Our daughter and grandchildren live there.

2) Sicily for sun, archaeology, history and food.

Q 7-Favourite Business motto?

Quality, quality, quality. Do unto others…………
