Intro to becoming a Master Craftsman
I started working in the 1970s as an apprentice glass cutter in Waterford Crystal. Within a few months, I was producing stemware and I worked my way up to Master Craftsman status, cutting larger prestige pieces.
I am one of only a select few people who have trained as a Wedge Cutter and Flat Cutter. Having worked in all four plants within Waterford Crystal, I have gained vast experience in all aspects of the craft.
Q 1 – How does your normal day begin?
My day starts around 6:30 am where I travel from South Kilkenny, across the beautiful river Suir, along the historic Viking Quay and into the House of Waterford where I usually work from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm. Most days new products have to be made for the global market.
Q 2 – What are your biggest daily challenges?
Knowing that I’m a vital cog in the wheel from the mixing of the ingredients to the production of the spectacular finished product. We consider the most difficult pieces all part of a day’s work.
Q 3 – What do you love most about your job?
As the House of Waterford is one of the largest tourist attractions in Ireland it’s so rewarding to listen to compliments and observe people in complete awe of our unique craftsmanship.
Q 4 – What do you do to relax?
I like to refurbish and repair vintage cars of which I have five, even though my wife reminds me if I buy any more, I’ll be sleeping in them.
Q 5 – Favourite staycation destination in Ireland and why.
For me, it has to be Wicklow, the garden of Ireland – the glacial valley of Glendalough, renowned for its 6th-century medieval monastic settlement, founded by St. Kevin.
Q 6 – Favourite holiday destination worldwide.
From living in an idyllic country setting I love the contrast and intoxicating hustle and bustle of London.
Q 7 – Favourite business motto.
It’s the small things that make perfection but perfection is no small thing (Henry Royce).
Q 8 – Advice for young business entrepreneurs.
You are the artist of your own life, don’t hand the paintbrush to anyone else to finish your portrait.
