A Song for the Season: EPIC’s Galway Bay Video Drives Charity Donations

December 2024 – This Christmas, EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum is spreading festive cheer and community spirit with a special campaign inspired by the iconic Fairytale of New York. Bringing their unique tribute to life once again, EPIC’s campaign takes on an even greater purpose this year by raising funds for the Dublin Simon Community

Building on the viral success of last year’s initiative, which featured a choir of retired NYPD officers performing Galway Bay, EPIC is now dedicating this heartwarming project to supporting those in need. For every view of the Boys of the NYPD Choir singing Galway Bay video, EPIC will donate €1 to the Dublin Simon Community. This charity provides vital services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Dublin and surrounding areas, offering housing, healthcare, education, and outreach support.

Aileesh Carew, CEO of EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, commented, “The creation of this video and song last year reminded people of the power of music and storytelling to bring us together, especially at this time of year when we think of our loved ones far from home. This Christmas, we hope everyone will watch, share, and send this video to family and friends around the world, spreading the spirit of connection and togetherness that defines the Irish diaspora. By doing so, they’ll not only celebrate our shared heritage but also support Dublin Simon Community, a vital cause close to our hearts.”

The campaign centres on the iconic lyric, “the boys of the NYPD choir were singing Galway Bay,” from Fairytale of New York. While this portrayed scene was fictional, EPIC brought it to life last year with an unforgettable performance by retired NYPD officers. This year, the campaign calls on the global Irish community to come together and spread festive goodwill,  and help make a lasting impact for those in need.

To date, the video has resonated with countless members of the Irish diaspora across the globe, reaching audiences in the United States, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and many more. The emotional impact of the song is evident from heartfelt viewer comments, such as, “Thank you from a member of the Irish diaspora in Australia,” and, “I’m filling up watching this in the UK.”

Last week, EPIC gave Dubliners a festive surprise when an NYPD squad car made its way through the city, playing Galway Bay as it passed iconic landmarks. This playful nod to the song brought smiles and curious glances from passersby, further setting the stage for this year’s campaign.
