Irish comedy Deadly Cuts has been sold to a host of film distributors and is expected to make its international debut in time for St Patrick’s Day.
The highly entertaining dark comedy was released to Irish audiences in early January, receiving widespread acclaim and earning a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film is now set to go global after being sold to distributors in the US, Australia, Spain and South Africa.
The feature-length comedy follows the stylists of a Dublin hair salon who become accidental vigilantes and community heroes as they take on a local gang threatening their neighbourhood.
Set in the fictional working-class Dublin neighbourhood of Piglinstown, the comedy sees salon owner Michelle (Angeline Ball) and her fellow stylists, Stacey (Ericka Roe), Chantelle (Shauna Higgins) and Gemma (Lauren Larkin) hounded by the gang on their doorstep, led by the menacing hoodlum Deano (Ian Lloyd Anderson).
Greasy local politician Darren Flynn (Aidan McArdle) is another thorn in their sides. He has designs on gentrifying Piglinstown and ripping down the row of shops the girls’ salon is on, to line his own pockets.
Dealing with everything from local gangs to unsympathetic politicians, the group tackle every obstacle in a desperate attempt to preserve their community, often finding themselves in hilarious over-the-top scenarios.
The comedy marks writer-director Rachel Carey’s feature debut. Speaking on RTÉ Radio One’s Morning Ireland Carey said: “It’s amazing to know it is going international. It is such an Irish film and I think it is unapologetically Dublin and very deliberately so. There is no toning down of slang or accents anywhere.
“I’m really excited about an international audience seeing it and seeing Dublin wit and humour for what it really is. And just how funny the Dublin dialect can be and the humour we like to make here. I hope it goes down well.”
Currently riding high on the Irish Netflix charts, Deadly Cuts is expected to reach international audiences by March of this year.
The film had its world premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival last year, when it screened as the Closing Gala of the festival.
