New Path to Connect with Nature launched at Powerscourt Gardens

Third best gardens in the World* has sustainability at its heart this Spring.

Leading Irish environmentalist and media personality Duncan Stewart was at Powerscourt Gardens ahead of Earth Day launching a new immersive reflective path at the beautiful Rhododendron Walk in the garden, which will allow the public to reconnect with nature at the 3rdbest garden in the World.

The beautiful Rhododendron Walk at Powerscourt has been enhanced with a new immersive reflective path into the heart of the Rhododendron plantation. The path encompasses a dry-stone wall lined walkway and boardwalk allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a unique experience as they follow the path through the heart of a very delicate ecosystem.

Speaking at the launch of the Immersive, Reflective path, Managing Director at Powerscourt Estate Sarah Slazenger said:

“We see ourselves as custodians of Powerscourt for future generations and our aim is leave it in a better state for them.  A key part of our vision is to work with nature but also to allow visitors to the gardens an opportunity to have time to really be immersed in and to connect with nature.

We see sustainability as vital for the future of Powerscourt. We have programmes for tree planting, wildflowers meadows, bee keeping and more as part of our environmental initiatives.”

The immersive, reflective path has beautiful vistas across the Wicklow mountains and allows visitors to journey through one of the most diverse areas for animals and plants in Powerscourt gardens.  The trees surrounding the path act as a natural sound proofing shield and the two resting areas nestled amongst the plants enable visitors to take time out to reflect, reset and to connect with nature.

Over one hundred (100) species Rhododendron including Rhododendron. thompson, R. cilliatum, R. anthropogenic, R cinnabar was planted for the new path as the area is very peat rich and acidic and perfect for rhododendron growth.  The Rhododendrons bloom from late March to June with their distinct array of colours from white, pink, carmine red, lavender, deep purple, and blue hues on display. The path will allow visitors a bird’s eye view of the beautiful rhododendrons in bloom and to spot some of the amazing wildlife which can be observed in the gardens from red squirrels to woodpeckers.

The long-term overarching mission at Powerscourt Estate is for the Estate to be recognised on a global stage for its sustainability initiatives, and to be Net Zero by 2025.
