Tourism Ireland welcomes news that Ireland is voted friendliest country in Europe – by readers of Condé Nast Traveller magazine

~ Dublin voted sixth friendliest city in Europe ~

4 October 2022 – Ireland has been named the friendliest country in Europe by the readers of the popular travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller.

Condé Nast Traveller asked its readers to decide on their favourite countries, cities, hotels and resorts around the globe, in its annual Readers Choice Awards survey. The magazine has unveiled the results of its 2022 survey – taken by hundreds of thousands of its readers – including its list of Europe’s friendliest countries, where readers felt most welcome. Beating off stiff competition from other popular destinations – like Portugal, Greece, Iceland and Turkey – Ireland was voted number one. And, in the readers’ list of friendliest cities in Europe, Dublin came in in sixth place. To view the results, click here.

Welcoming the news, Niall Gibbons, Chief Executive of Tourism Ireland, said: “I am delighted that Ireland has been named the friendliest country in Europe, and Dublin the sixth friendliest city, in this year’s prestigious Condé Nast Traveller readers’ survey. Again and again, our research shows us that the friendliness of our people is one of our unique selling points. It is the warm welcome and the ‘craic’ here that resonates with our overseas visitors and makes the island of Ireland such a great choice for a short break or holiday. This accolade by the readers of Condé Nast Traveller magazine gives Tourism Ireland another great platform to continue to promote Ireland around the world as a ‘must see’ destination.”

This is what Condé Nast Traveller had to say about Ireland: “Countless global reports have continually dubbed the people of Ireland as some of the friendliest and most welcoming to visitors in the world, and our readers feel the same; voting it into the top spot for the friendliest countries in Europe. Of course, the breweries and lively atmosphere of Dublin are a must, but there are plenty of more natural discoveries to be made here for those willing to venture a little further.

Comments about Dublin included:

“Perhaps an unsurprising inclusion in our readers’ list of the friendliest cities in Europe, Dublin is a city at ease with revelry. From curb-side fiddle-playing to lively nightlife that rages on into the early morning, Ireland’s capital seamlessly combines its zest for life with nods to its radical history in the form of landmarks, museums and the stories told by strangers-turned-friends met along the way.”

The friendliest countries in Europe, according to the 2022 Condé Nast Traveler survey, are:

  1. Ireland
  2. Portugal
  3. Greece
  4. Iceland
  5. Finland
  6. Turkey
  7. Denmark
  8. Netherlands
  9. Italy
  10. Spain
