“A day in the life of” Fergal O Connor, Director, Buymedia

Fergal O’Connor has worked with SME Advertisers for 25 years across multiple media types.
Six years ago Fergal started Buymedia with the aim of helping small and medium businesses grow through more effective advertising.
That journey has seen the Buymedia team develop an advertising platform that de-risks advertising spend by using data and insights from consumer, media and marketing databases.
These insights increase advertising ROI by improving the planning, purchasing, management and learning processes for businesses across all media. Buymedia is an Enterprise Ireland supported company.
Q 1- How does your normal day begin?
I usually check in with the Buymedia team to make sure they are all happy with the projects we’re working on. Media, Technical and Financial teams all have their own specific challenges and it’s like a workout for the brain first thing every morning to chat with them to see how we can come up with solutions.
Q 2- What are your biggest daily challenges?
Time, there is never enough hours in the day or days in the week to tackle all the interesting and innovative ideas that our crew develop. The trick for me is to try to help the team and myself prioritise the urgent and important over the rest.
Q3- What do you love most about your job?
The people and the challenges. We have a great team in Buymedia and we work with interesting and open advertisers and media companies. Helping both the team and our clients overcome the challenges that they face in their day to day advertising and developing solutions to make their lives better and their businesses grow is hugely rewarding.
Q 4- What do you do to relax?
I try to have a regular exercise regime – to clear my head and stay fit. I also read a lot, I usually have about 5 books on the go at once – usually advertising, marketing, psychology, technology or business-related.
Q 5-Favourite staycation destination in Ireland and why?
Anywhere near the sea, that’s scenic – Donegal, Kerry or Wexford would be my top picks.
Q 6-Favourite holiday destination worldwide?
New York for the buzz of the city and Bali for relaxing on the beach.
Q 7-Favourite Business motto?
Be Curious.
Q 8. Advice for young business entrepreneurs
Don’t run out of cash.
