Kylemore Abbey springs open its doors once again. One of Ireland’s premier visitor attractions, Kylemore Abbey, has reopened after a winter closure.

Set in the ruggedly beautiful Connemara region, on the shore of Lough Pollacappul, nineteenth-century Kylemore Abbey is a must-see along Ireland’s stunning Wild Atlantic Way.

Built in 1867 as a castle and gift from Mitchell Henry to his beloved wife Margaret, but now owned by the Benedictine religious community, the abbey is steeped in history and regarded as one of Ireland’s most romantic and beautiful buildings.

Its impressive architecture and peaceful setting attract thousands of visitors every year to view its beautifully restored period rooms, stroll through its six-acre Victorian walled garden, and explore its ‘cathedral-in-miniature’ neo-Gothic church.

This year, additional reasons to visit include an art exhibition presented in conjunction with the Irish Georgian Society, and the 21st celebration of the restoration of the walled garden. The garden is planted with 11,000 bulbs every year using only plant varieties from the Victorian era and features Ireland’s longest herbaceous border.

The introduction of a range of new products is also planned for Kylemore’s redesigned Craft and Design Shop. The shop already sells soaps and chocolates handmade by the Benedictine Nuns, the distinctive Fuchsia pottery from Kylemore Abbey pottery, and honey produced by Irish black bees from the Kylemore estate. It also stocks a range of craft products from local designers.

2022 will also welcome the ‘Peaceful’ Connemara foals back to Kylemore’s 1,000-acre estate. The estate is criss-crossed with woodland, lakeshore and riverside walks providing the opportunity to reconnect with nature in a wonderfully serene environment.

Visitors can also enjoy guided hikes through Duchruach Mountain, which lies behind Kylemore Abbey. The hikes offer fabulous views and myriad photo opportunities, and the guides explain the fascinating history of Kylemore and of the Connemara region, with its unique flora, fauna and geology.

Kylemore Abbey is also famous for its traditional home-cooked food which has always been an important part of the traditional Benedictine welcome. This can be enjoyed in the self-service Kylemore Kitchen or in the Tea House beside the walled garden.

Throughout the year, more events will be added to the calendar of activities, ensuring Kylemore Abbey remains an unmissable destination for visitors to Ireland’s magnificent west.
