Hell of the West triathlon in Kilkee, Co. Clare.

Held yearly in Kilkee, County Clare, Hell of the West provides racers with a picturesque yet demanding course that lives up to its intimidating moniker. This triathlon takes athletes through some of Ireland’s most stunning scenery.

The event begins against the beautiful backdrop of Kilkee Bay’s clear, blue sea and rocky cliffs. The 1.5 km swim challenges the athletes with the occasional waves of the Atlantic. Following the swim, the racers hop on their bikes as they embark in a 40 km journey along the Wild Atlantic Way. This route highlights the Atlantic coast, with its breathtaking views of the ocean and green, rolling hills. Cyclists will wrestle with the hard steep climbs and swift descents of this route, but they will be rewarded with the thrilling views of County Clare’s natural beauty.

The cherry on top comes in the form of a 10-kilometre run through Kilkee’s picturesque town and surrounding countryside. Runners travel along the striking Cliff Road, with its exciting views of the untamed shoreline and the vast ocean in the distance. For those ready for a challenge, the Hell of the West triathlon offers an unforgettable experience due to its unique blend of physical test and breathtaking scenery.

Hazelwood Olympic (Sligo)

The Hazelwood Triathlon in County Sligo combines the demanding nature of a triathlon with the serene scenery of northwest Ireland to provide athletes with an experience they won’t soon forget. This endurance challenge takes participants through some of the most amazing landscapes in the area.

The 1.5 km swim that kicks off the event takes place in the tranquil waters of Lough Gill, which is bordered by rolling hills and dense woodlands. The peaceful water contrasts the obstacles that lie ahead, making for an inviting yet exhilarating beginning to the triathlon.

After the swim, participants switch to a 40-kilometre bike ride that winds through the central region of County Sligo. Riding along twisting country roads, cyclists pass by charming towns and lush countryside. The route showcases the area’s rural charm and natural beauty, while offering both challenge and respite due to its undulating hills and gradual slopes.

The triathlon’s last leg is a 10 km run through the Hazelwood Forest. Runners are guided by ancient trees that border shady paths, allowing sunlight to peek gently through the thick canopy. The forest trail transports visitors in time to a peaceful wooded setting, which makes it at once tough and captivating.

The combination of lake, green fields and forest, highlights the natural marvels of County Sligo in an immersive experience from which competitors will undoubtedly leave with an unrivalled sense of achievement.

Hook or by Crook (Waterford)

Held in County Waterford, the Hook or by Crook Triathlon is a beloved competition that blends physical stamina with the captivating southeast coast of Ireland. 

The 750-metre swim kicks off the race in Dunmore East’s pristine waters. Swimming is permitted in the protected cove, nestled between colourful fishing boats and craggy cliffs. The harbour sets the mood for the race, and the Celtic Sea offers a cool and energising start.

A 20-kilometre bike ride along the stunning Hook Peninsula shoreline awaits participants after the swim. The path offers expansive views of the ocean, meadows that roll gently, and quaint coastal towns. The Celtic Sea provides a spectacular backdrop for cyclists as they navigate both rolling hills and flat sections.

A 5 km run through the charming village of Dunmore East and the surrounding countryside makes up the final segment. Runners move through little streets dotted with colourful vegetation and old-fashioned cottages. The course winds through a variety of landscapes, from charming town streets to picturesque seaside trails, and as it nears the finish line, it offers up a breathtaking view of the ocean.

The greatest of County Waterford’s sceneries are included in this event, making it an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
