The stunning landscapes of Ireland’s west coast will be showcased in The Banshees of Inisherin, the latest film from Academy Award and BAFTA-winning director Martin McDonagh, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. The film, which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September, is set to go on release in Ireland, Britain and the United States on 21 October.

Tourism Ireland – in conjunction with Searchlight Pictures – has created a short, behind-the-scenes featurette using footage shot during filming for The Banshees of Inisherin. It includes director, writer and producer Martin McDonagh, as well as actors Colin Farrell (who plays Pádraic), Brendan Gleeson (Colm), Kerry Condon (Siobhán) and Barry Keoghan (Dominic) – who describe and praise the special locations chosen for filming.

It is being shared by Tourism Ireland on social media, including Facebook and Instagram, in Britain, the United States and France – highlighting our stunning scenery and reminding people that The Banshees of Inisherin was shot on location here. The behind-the-scenes featurette will also be shared with Tourism Ireland’s database of journalists in Britain, the US and France.

Filming for The Banshees of Inisherin took place on Achill Island and Inis Mór – at places like Keem Bay, Lough Acorrymore, Purteen Harbour, St Thomas’ Church and Cloughmore (all Achill Island), as well as Gort na gCapall, Bungowla, Lighthouse Lane, Dún Aonghasa and Rabbit Beach (all Inis Mór).

Niall Gibbons, Chief Executive of Tourism Ireland, said: “We are extremely grateful to Searchlight Pictures for their generosity in agreeing to make this behind-the-scenes look with us. It allows us to keep the beauty of the West of Ireland to the fore and to showcase our authentic home-grown talent. We were delighted to see the huge success that The Banshees of Inisherin enjoyed at the Venice Film Festival last month. Tourism Ireland is capitalising on this positive exposure for Ireland, bringing the beautiful scenery of the Wild Atlantic Way to the attention of people in some of our main markets and inspiring them to visit.”

In the behind-the-scenes featurette, Martin McDonagh says: What we wanted to capture in the film was the beauty of Ireland and the cinema of it. We just wanted to make one of the most beautiful Irish films we could possibly make.”

Five travel journalists and five entertainment journalists – from Britain, the US, France and Germany – were invited to visit over the weekend; their itinerary included a screening of The Banshees of Inisherin at Dublin’s Light House Cinema, as well as visits to Achill Island and Inis Mór.
